Let's Work Together to Defeat Anti-BDS Legislation!

The Palestinian civil society-led campaign for boycott, divestment and sanctions (BDS) to achieve Palestinian freedom, justice and equality has made huge strides in recent years. Just yesterday, G4S, which is complicit in Israel's abuse of Palestinian prisoners, announced it was selling its Israeli subsidiary, and Israeli cosmetic company Ahava declared it was moving its plant out of the occupied West Bank. Both of these wins came after years of campaigns by people just like you worldwide.

As BDS continues to prove itself as an effective tactic to pressure Israel to end its oppression of Palestinians, the Israeli government and its supporters have been pushing heavy-handed legislation that seeks to punish and suppress BDS.

From bills that bar state contracts with companies that support BDS, to state-sanctioned blacklists of nonprofits which boycott Israeli goods, to bills that deny funding to academic institutions that pass BDS resolutions, these bills are popping up in nearly every state in a coordinated push to try to stop the momentum of the BDS movement.

We’ve been hard at work with member groups and ad hoc state coalitions to defeat these anti-BDS bills in places such as New Castle County, Delaware and Virginia. And for the moment, working with local groups and activists, we’ve stymied anti-BDS bills in states such as New York, Maryland and California.

Today, with member groups Palestine Legal and Jewish Voice for Peace, we’re ratcheting up our efforts to stop these anti-BDS bills with the launch of a new, interactive website www.righttoboycott.org.

On the website, you can explore state bills, contact us if you hear of any new legislation being introduced, take action to help defeat these unconstitutional bills, and read and share legal analyses.

And while we’re on the subject, we want to remind you that the First Amendment, as interpreted by the Supreme Court, guarantees your right to advocate for and organize BDS campaigns.
