We know that capitalism depends not only on paid labour, but also on invisible, naturalised, and unpaid care work, which continues to fall on the same people – women. When austerity policies cut public services, they transfer systemic costs to kitchens and bedrooms, to women’s arms and backs.

The banner lent its name to his 1926 play The Starry Plough, in which one protagonist, declares: “It’s a flag that should only be used when we’re building the barricades to fight for a Workers Republic!”
