Four months into Israel’s genocidal assault on Gaza, one might have thought that American policymakers and commentators would have learned some lessons.

About two months after the hostage exchange deal blew up, we can state with certainty that the decision to stop it was a terrible mistake. We must say clearly that the hostages have to be freed through a deal. That is the only way.

With the question of whether Israel is committing genocide in Gaza now before the International Court of Justice, the Biden administration has struck a tone of glib dismissal. The administration’s posture of indifference strains credulity.

Israeli officials said their goal is to ensure that Gaza will be an unlivable place once they end their merciless military campaign. Filling those tunnels with polluted water will ensure remaining residential buildings will suffer structural problems

In 2005, Palestinians called on the world to boycott Israel until it complied with international law. What if we had listened? The current atrocities in Gaza dramatically strengthen the case for boycott, divestment and sanctions.

Gaza is being devastated as we watch. A stated goal of Israel’s assault, is to “destroy Hamas”. Israel’s goal is less to vanquish Hamas—impossible in any case—than to finally expel Palestinians from Gaza without international censure or sanction.
