New York City—After Hillary Clinton’s decisive win in today’s New York state primary, leaders of the American Federation of Teachers, the New York State United Teachers and the United Federation of Teachers praised Clinton and thanked thousands of members who volunteered and voted in the contest.

“You can’t pull a fast one on New York voters,” said AFT President Randi Weingarten. “When New Yorkers took the measure of both candidates, they decisively said Hillary Clinton is the best qualified to be president. Her experience, accomplishments and history of delivering for New York families stood above big promises. They chose a candidate who not only shares their values, but who can deliver on those values from the White House.

“New Yorkers know firsthand that Hillary Clinton has dedicated her life to breaking down barriers, whether those are economic, racial, or based on our gender, who we love or where we were born. As she’s crisscrossed the state, she’s reminded New Yorkers of her commitment and her real plans to help them succeed.

“Another thing I heard in conversation with our members—and the exit polls show the same thing—is that Democrats will come together as a party to support the nominee and fight to make sure everyone can achieve the American dream.”

“In a state known for its tough politics, Hillary Clinton’s primary victory is an especially gratifying affirmation. It’s an affirmation by astute New Yorkers that Hillary Clinton’s breadth and depth of experience makes her the most qualified candidate for president. And it’s an affirmation of the important role that NYSUT members play in elections when they are engaged and motivated to knock on doors, make phone calls and hand out literature for a candidate they believe in,” said NYSUT President Karen E. Magee. “A little more than a week ago, Hillary Clinton spoke to 2,000 NYSUT members in Rochester. She vowed to stand with educators and said, ‘I am with you. I will fight for you.’ Today, NYSUT members remembered her unwavering support for public education and for workers’ rights, women’s rights and LGBT rights, and they stood with her and fought for her, all the way to victory.”

“New Yorkers have a long history with Hillary. We know that she can get things done. We know she cares about students and teachers and our public schools,” said UFT President Michael Mulgrew. “We know she wants to make sure the middle class and working people have a voice in how this country works. That message came through here in New York.”
