REWIND - A Week of Quotes and Cartoons

SUNDAY

Quote of the Day
March 23, 2014

'In 2014, we are facing an extremely difficult
situation, a social emergency, that demands a massive
collective response from all workers, citizens and the
people.'

From the manifesto of the
organizers of the "March for
Dignity" that brought tens
of thousands of demonstrators
to Madrid, this weekend,
some having walked from the
furthest corners of Spain,
at the end of a month-long
to protest against draconian
austerity policies

MONDAY

Quote of the Day

'While the proponents of school choice argue that public
schools are not properly equipping children for success
in the real world and need to be held accountable, they
often reject accountability for private schools that use
textbooks that not only are overtly sectarian, but pass
off highly controversial assertions - or outright
falsehoods - as indisputable fact. All too frequently,
low-income children and people of color are used as
pawns in this push for what amounts to little more than
the right to use taxpayer dollars for right-wing
indoctrination.'

TUESDAY

Quote of the Day

'So, it's no wonder that politicians don't do what
average Americans want. Significant majorities of
average Americans think Congress should raise the
minimum wage, extend unemployment insurance, lower
income inequality and provide a path to citizenship for
immigrants. But these are not the priorities of the 1
percent or of corporations. And, naturally, they are not
the priorities of the politicians who owe their
victories to buckets of cash from the 1 percent and
corporations.

'The rich can buy more of everything. More food. More
cars. More houses. More vacations. More boats. But for a
democracy to function properly, they should be forbidden
from buying more votes.'

Steelworkers (USW)

FRIDAY

Quote of the Day

'"Looking out for people and making sure people are
treated fairly has always been in our family morals,"
Colter said in an interview with The Associated Press in
Bradenton, Fla., where he is training for the NFL draft.
"Obviously people come from different backgrounds and
different situations, but everybody deserves to be
treated fairly and they deserve basic rights and basic
protections."

'Colter's grandmother, Betty Flagg, died last month and
was buried in some of his Northwestern gear. She only
watched television when the Wildcats were playing.
Colter, 21, said he thinks his grandmother would be
proud of his role in the unionization effort.

'"We were talking at the funeral and they were telling
stories about how she came from picking cotton to
working as an office manager in the firm," he said. The
attorney at the firm described how she fought for
certain employees to receive fair bonuses for their
work.

'"She was doing that, fighting for their rights and
fighting for them to be treated fairly, basically,"
Colter said.'
