Greek Sailors Stage 48-Hour Strike Against Austerity Measures
ATHENS (Sputnik) – The sailors are protesting the Greek government's plans to reform pension and social security systems, and the elimination of seamen insurance fund NAT. PNO announced a possible prolongation of the stoppage.
The federation staged a four-day strike against the government "anti-people policy" in November.
On January 15, the Greek major private sector labor union General Confederation of Greek Workers (GSEE) announced that a 24-hour strike would be held on February 4 in response to government social reforms. The union's executive board said it might prolong strike beyond 24 hours if necessary.
GSEE called for Greek workers to join a rally against pension reform, organized by the Greek umbrella union for the public sector, the Civil Servants' Confederation (ADEDY), in Athens on Saturday. Some 3,000 people participated in the protest.
