YES To A Deal  --  Standing Together

FINALLY! A ceasefire and hostage deal has been reached! After so many months of suffering, soon the first hostages will be released and the airstrikes on Gaza will stop. As we have been saying for so long: agreements save lives.

Now is the time to celebrate but also to hold our leaders accountable: there must be a full deal that leaves no hostage behind and ends the war once and for all.

Re: LA Real Estate Lobbied To Develop in High-Risk Fire Areas

In California, policymakers have long warned that continued development in high-risk wildfire zones was magnifying fires. But real estate interests have lobbied hard against any development restrictions, helping exacerbate the LA fires.

Re: Dr. Martin Luther King’s Prophetic Warning, Denouncing the Merchants of Death

Who are the criminals? U.S. news coverage of five former or current presidents gathered for the funeral of President Jimmy Carter never hinted that hideous wars of choice along with massive increases in weapon sales had marked the administration of each of the five. There was no mention of President Biden’s order to send eight billion dollars of weapons to Gaza. This gathering of U.S. presidents is referred to as “The World’s Most Exclusive Club.”  Exclusive indeed. What other club of so few has caused so much suffering to so many?

On April 7, 1967, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. gave his famously insightful, prophetic speech about another illegal U.S. war of choice – “Beyond Viet Nam: A Time to Break the Silence” – in which Dr. King said:  “Increasingly, by choice or by accident, this is the role our nation has taken: the role of those who make peaceful resolution impossible by refusing to give up the privileges and the pleasures that come from the immense profits of overseas investments.”

Re: Canada as a 51st State? Republicans Would Never Win Another General Election

For a supposed anti-interventionist, it’s odd that Trump is enthusiastically embracing ideas from the era of intense American imperialism.

Re: What’s Really Going On With Growing Homeless Rates?

Thank you for this article. It has always been within the American character to blame the victim. This lets politicians and policy makers and the well-to-do and near-well-to do off the hook -no responsibility, no guilt.  What is the point of being a society if we can not take care of the indigent? Oh,Frances Perkins, we need you!  Nothing is simple. But, tax cuts for the wealthy are becoming a mainstay. MAGA duped again!  After the immigrants are cast out and the homeless are hidden, who is next to be blamed? I hope the incoming shadow president, the first buddy, who hold Americans in disdain, does not become our premier policymaker.

While Los Angeles is on fire right now, a trans sports ban is Republicans' number one priority, charges Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.

Re: President Biden Should Pardon Ethel Rosenberg

A newly released classified document shows that the National Security Agency knew Ethel Rosenberg was not a spy—and that the government executed her anyway.

Rather than the case being closed on Ethel’s guilt, as alleged, the Gardner memorandum absolves her, as the FBI knew at the time of her execution. Now is the time for an historic injustice to be redressed. Now is the time for Joe Biden to issue a full exoneration or, at the least, a presidential pardon of Ethel Rosenberg. Truth and justice will thereby be served.

Neither one of them did anything that justified execution. They did not commit treason. They were not charged with treason. They were not convicted of treason. They were killed for political reasons.

What???!!!! And risk the recrudescence (love that word) of the red scare that ALWAYS overtakes Americans of a certain age? It's only a matter of justice--and, dare we say, acknowledgement of a...mistake.

Re: Peter Yarrow, Singer With Folk Legends Peter, Paul & Mary and Co-Writer of ‘Puff the Magic Dragon,’ Dies at 86

Of his recent shows, Yarrow said, “It’s really a remarkable phenomenon because the kind of warmth and enthusiasm and caring, that was once just expected and taken for granted, is reignited amongst people when they sing together, songs like ‘Puff the Magic Dragon’ or ‘Leavin’ on a Jet Plane.’ It’s phenomenally moving because it kind of asserts the spirit that bound us together so powerfully so many decades ago and still is in our in our culture and in our hearts and in our DNA. In the era of the animosities of our time, it’s something that’s so restorative to people, so confirmational. No, we’re not gone, no, we still believe in something together. Yes, we still have positive advocacy. Truth, fact, is not a moving target. There are real facts that exist. We have to understand that the dangerous slide of the culture and politics into this polarized, hate-filled perspective is not something that necessarily has to subdue us.”

It's unfortunate that Peter thought there weren't movement songs like there used to be.  I have written many, as have other members of People's Music Network.  My problem has been finding musicians who will consider singing them, as well as encountering rally organizers who won't let them be sung.  In case any see this and will inquire, write to me at newmsian@hotmail.com.
