We must also recognize that this is a long and complex struggle, one that requires achieving small victories across a range of political arenas, while continuously evaluating how we manage our resources to produce results on the ground.

The Abahambe (‘throw them out’) anti-migrant vigilantes are dangerous because they take real pain and point it in the wrong direction. They take genuine grievances and convert them into right-wing politics. They take the anger of working-class people and turn it away from capital, the state, corruption, unemployment, collapsing services and inequality – and direct it at other poor Africans.
