La Historia Vive
Amílcar y Aníbal, dos jóvenes que trabajaron en nuestra casa.
No sabían nada de sus nombres.
La memoria vive
En los nombres, los nombres
De las lucha eterna
Contra Roma,
La antigua y la nueva Roma,
En los barrios de Nueva York,
En la calle 122, en la 123.
Pero han olvidado la historia, el recuerdo
Que aún vive
En los nombres–-
Amílcar, y
Aníbal: quienes, desde África con elefantes,
Abrieron la brecha
En la muralla de los Alpes.
Pero los jóvenes no conocen ni a Amílcar ni a Aníbal,
Contra Roma,
La antigua y la nueva Roma.
Solo conocen esto: los nombres–-
Sin historia, sin memoria.
Solo los nombres.
History Lives
Amílcar and Anibal, two young men who worked
on our house. They knew nothing about their names.
Memory lives
In the names, the names
Of the eternal struggle
Against Rome,
The old and the new Rome,
In the neighborhoods of New York,
On 122nd Street, on 123rd.
But they have forgotten the history, the memory
That still lives
In the names–-
Hamílcar, and
Hannibal: who, from Africa with elephants,
Breached
The wall of the Alps.
But the young people
Don’t know Hamílcar or Hannibal,
Against Rome,
The old and the new Rome.
They only know this: the names–-
Without history, without memory.
Only the names.
