REWIND - A Week of Quote and Cartoons

SUNDAY

Quote of the Day
February 9, 2014

'We have come to say to the extremists, who ignore
the common good and have chosen the low road,
your actions have worked in reverse. You may have
thought you were going to discourage us, but
instead you have encouraged us. The more you
push us back, the more we will fight to go forward.
The more you try to oppress us, the more you will
inspire us.'

Reverend William Barber II, president
of the North Carolina NAACP and the
leader of the Moral Monday movement,
in his keynote speech to Saturday's
massive “Moral March” in Raleigh that
drew tens of thousands of activists -
from all backgrounds, races and
causes - marching from Shaw
University to the State Capitol

WEDNESDAY

Quote of the Day
February 12, 2014

''The nation’s leading anti-tax activist, Grover
Norquist, and his group, Americans for Tax Reform,
have joined the anti-union campaign, warning that
a U.A.W. victory would help bring big government to
Tennessee. The group’s new affiliate, the Center for
Worker Freedom, has put up 13 billboards in
Chattanooga, with some calling the U.A.W. “United
Obama Workers” and saying, “The UAW spends
millions to elect liberal politicans” — misspelling
“politicians.” Another billboard says, “Detroit:
Brought to you by the U.A.W.,” and shows a photo of
a Packard plant that was shuttered 55 years ago.'

As workers at the Volkswagen plant
in Chattanooga, Tenn., prepare to
vote this week on whether to join
the United Automobile Workers,
facing unusual pressure from the
state’s Republican legislators to
reject the union.

THURSDAY

Quote of the Day
February 13, 2014

'Bloomberg reports on the soaring prices of trophy
apartments in Manhattan. The biggest sale so far
was former Citigroup head Sandy Weill's apartment,
which he sold for $88 million to the daughter of a
Russian oligarch. But $100 million listings are out
there.

'For a bit of perspective: the median full-time worker
in the United States makes about $40,000 a year.
So it would take the typical worker 2,000 years to
earn enough to buy the Weill apartment.

'Still, people like Weill are exemplars of the free
market at work. They work in an industry that
delivers clear value to the economy, and has never
relied on government bailouts. Oh, wait.'

FRIDAY

Quote of the Day
February 14, 2014

'This is a company that has already been caught
blocking internet traffic. But it's clear their long-
term plan is to take a free and open internet and
turn it into something like cable TV, where they pick
the channels and they speed them up and slow
them down based on who pays them the most.

'If you hate your cable guy now, you are going to
hate your cable guy on steroids.'

Craig Aaron, president of internet
rights lobby group Free Press, on
the proposed the merger of cable
giant Comcast and Time Warner Cable

'One great thing about the U.A.W., one great thing
about workers, is we don't quit. We face setbacks
and we get up to fight another day to make sure
workers have a voice.'

Bob King, president of the United
Auto Workers union following the
workers' vote  this week narrowly
rejecting unionization at the
