While defeating "corporate Democrats" would be nice, I will take a pass on it this time if it means uniting Democrats to defeat trump.

"the most leftwing Democratic presidential nominee in history" Incredible claim. Certainly FDR was far left of Warren. And while he isn't yet the nominee, Sanders is to the left of Warren. And I don't trust a word she says.

My take is different. Since Klobuchar will soon drop out, that leaves the NYT endorsing Warren! Not quite Bernie, but still more progressive and more opposed by Wall Street than I would expect.

Re: The Truth About the Trump Economy

To get a good reading on a country's economic health, start by looking at the health of its citizens. If they are happy and prosperous, they will be healthy and live longer. Among developed countries, America sits at the bottom in this regard. US life expectancy, already relatively low, fell in each of the first two years of Trump's presidency, and in 2017, midlife mortality reached its highest rate since World War II. This is not a surprise, because no president has worked harder to make sure that more Americans lack health insurance. Millions have lost their coverage, and the uninsured rate has risen, in just two years, from 10.9% to 13.7%.

One reason for declining life expectancy in America is what Anne Case and Nobel laureate economist Angus Deaton call deaths of despair, caused by alcohol, drug overdoses, and suicide. In 2017 (the most recent year for which good data are available), such deaths stood at almost four times their 1999

Re: Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez: One Year in Washington

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez reshaped her party's agenda and resuscitated Bernie Sanders's campaign. Ocasio-Cortez isn't the first politician to become a cultural sensation, but she may be the first to do so at the very beginning of her career, when she is occupying the lowest rung of political power. Her main project going forward may be this: harnessing her immense star power and the legion of young lefties who see her as their avatar, not just to push the Democratic Party away from an obsession with its most moderate members but also to make the stuff of government, like congressional committee hearings and neighborhood town halls, into must-see TV. She said the Congressional Progressive Caucus should start kicking people out if they stray too far from the party line. Other caucuses within the Democratic Party in Congress require applications, Ocasio-Cortez pointed out. But -they let anybody who the cat dragged in call themselves a progressive. There's no standard,- she said.

Re: The New U.S. Trade Deal Is Climate Sabotage

(posting on Portside Labor)

"The deal also goes out of the way to protect fossil fuel companies. All of the tar sands oil that flows to the U.S. from Canada via the Keystone XL pipeline will be exempt from tariffs under the USMCA. While the deal has been praised for largely eliminating Nafta's Investor-State Dispute Settlement provisions-which made it easy for corporations to challenge governments over laws they don't like-there are some troubling exceptions to that policy under the USMCA: Oil and gas companies that have contracts with the Mexican government, for example, will still be allowed to challenge any potential threats to their profits posed by state policy. "It's like saying we're going to protect the henhouse by keeping all animals away except for foxes," Beachy said, adding that "today's vote moves us one step closer to locking in Trump's polluting legacy for decades to come."

"Over the last 30 years, trade agreements have gotten stronger as climate deals have grown weaker. At the urging of both Republican and Democratic administrations in the U.S., the Paris Agreement swapped out the binding framework from the Kyoto Protocol for a so-called "bottom-up" system, wherein countries make voluntary commitments ("Nationally Determined Contributions") that may eventually limit the world's warming to "well below" two degrees Celsius (3.6 degrees Fahrenheit), instead of three or four degrees. There's a requirement that countries present new NDCs every so often, but many can simply resubmit their original commitments rather than ratcheting up ambition during each new pledge period. Trade agreements, by contrast, generally have stringent enforcement mechanisms and create paths for corporations to challenge sovereign governments over everything from "buy local" provisions to anti-dumping laws."

Re: This MLK Day, Remember Emmett Till and Voter Suppression

Let us do both: recognize that the long, hard struggle is far from over, and take courage from and build on the determination of those ever-so-many who have kept it going for us to pick up on.

From this::

"The prevailing belief of the circumstances surrounding 14-year-old Emmett Till's killing is that he was accused of whistling at a white woman. Yet, the truth is he was lynched as an act of voter intimidation."

"We can never be satisfied as long as the Negro is the victim of the unspeakable horrors of police brutality. We cannot be satisfied as long as the Negro in Mississippi cannot vote and the Negro in New York believes he has nothing for which to vote." -Martin Luther King Jr.

Re: Learning From King's Last Campaign

Martin Luther King talked about his new March on Washington before he died. Talking about land that black people were not given after they were freed. He talked about land that was taken away from black farmers. Said he was coming to Washington to ask for a check. Martin Luther King was talking about reparations. Martin Luther King was talking about black people controlling land and the means of production and distribution of goods to our communities around this country. Do not put words in Martin Luther King's mouth that he did not mean

Re: Former SF DA Terence Hallinan - a Brawler and Civil Rights Fighter - Dies at Age 83

Chesa Boudin was not the first left wing District Attorney for San Francisco. Kayo Hallinan was DA decades before. Many of us worked, played and demonstrated with him (and some of us remember his father Vincent whose defense of leftist labor leader Harry Bridges was the stuff of legend.) beginning in the early 60s in Mississippi and at Berkeley. My, now quite vague, memory is that Kayo, Conn and more of the Hallinan Clan were among those protesting the House Unamerican Activities Committee in San Francisco in 1960, when the cops turned the fire hoses on them. Thanks to Portside for the very good obituary.

Re: The Virginia Gun Rights Rally Raising Fears of Violence

I applaud gun control common sense legislation. This so called "rally" was a show of force meant to intimidate those that have better sense than to walk around with a gun. Gun carriers are generally low self esteem individuals that have a gun instead of a personality. The vast majority of them have never been the victim of a crime and never will. But somewhere in that group is America's next mass murderer. I'm sure the Las Vegas shooter ( 58 killed and 851 wounded) would have been there if he hadn't blown his own brains out.

The Latest Outrage in Austria

To start from the beginning of this story we need to go back to the 1920s when a Jewish family bought a 37,297 sq. meter property on the scenic Attersee, the beloved summer resort for many Viennese including some famous Austrian painters like Gustav Klimt.  In June 1938 the Nazis seized the property "for the benefit of the State of Upper Danube [the Nazis' new name for Upper Austria]." The Gestapo justified the seizure by noting that the owner's son was a socialist who had been involved in the 1934 armed resistance to the Austro-fascist regime.

Having survived the Holocaust and the war, the brother and sister whose father had owned the property filed for its restitution in 1947.  They were allowed to regain the property, but only if they paid off the latest owner from the Nazi time. But the only way they could pay off the Nazi was by selling the property to the State of Upper Austria, which they did in 1951.  But, and here's the rub, the sale contract included the proviso that the State would give the Young Socialists a 99 year lease on the property for a summer camp at a nominal rent of 25 Shillings a year-later revised to _10.
.
All well and good until a court ruled in 2018 that the nominal rent involved amounted to an illegal donation to the Socialist Party. Now the State of Upper Austria is raising the rent from _10 a year to _189,000 -an amount that the Young Socialists won't be able to pay without closing down their summer camp and either renting the property out to rich vacationers or just giving it up. The Young Socialists are appealing these rulings, but if their appeal fails it will amount to the 3rd time the property would have been stolen - 1st by the Nazis in 1938, then by the Austrian government's forced sale to Upper Austria in 1951, and now by the Austrian court and Upper Austria forcing the Young Socialists to give up their summer camp in violation of the sale contract provisions from 1951.

Puerto Rico - Poster of the Week

Puerto Rico Safety

Eric J. Garcia

Illustration, 2020

Chicago, Illinois

Puerto Rico hasn't fully recovered from the devastation resulting from Hurricane Maria that hit the Caribbean in 2017. This category 5 storm caused thousands of deaths and extensive physical damage to homes and public utilities. Recovery was limited by inadequate resources from the Trump administration and by corrupt politicians who took advantage of paltry aid that did arrive to enrich themselves.

?Now the island must recover from a swarm of earthquakes, the largest measuring a powerful 6.4. Many homes and public facilities have been destroyed. Puerto Ricans are U.S. citizens and are in desperate need of support. Inaction by the Trump administration means more and prolonged suffering. Unfortunately, Puerto Rico is a colony of the United States and it has been exploited for its human and natural resources and has been repeatedly neglected in times of need.

Top 10 Civil Rights Songs

The civil rights movement has resonated deeply with generations of musicians.

By Peter Rothberg

AP Photo  //  The Nation

This Monday's annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day marks what would have been the 91st birthday of the fallen civil rights leader. King, the first president of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, was the Nation's civil rights correspondent, writing annual reports on the state of the movement for the magazine from 1961 to 1966. He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964 and assassinated in 1968.

In King's honor, I tried the impossible task of selecting a top 10 list of songs about civil rights. The theme has resonated deeply with generations of artists of all stripes and inspired considerable musical tribute; this list is meant simply as a starting point for discussion (and listening). I present it in random order. I know I missed a lot.

Listen to all ten songs here.
