The laborers’ union in Hollywood is backing the push, which will be watched closely by early-career workers on other scripted shows.

The Trump administration is attacking jobs and wages in the building trades, as well as the rights of immigrant workers. Building trades unions have been divided over whether to try to curry favor with the president or confront the attacks head-on.

The administration is planning to overhaul dozens of rules that protect workers from exploitation and wage theft.

“I know I'm not going to be here 25 years from now, but for those who will be, keep this thing alive, keep fighting,” said Riley. “There's a lot of hard work, blood sweat and tears, and death on those docks that got us where we are today.”

Over the past few years, from California to New England, medical residents have been unionizing and striking by the thousands. They’ve composed some of the largest new units to unionize in the United States.

“People are at very great risk of dying on the job already,” Rebecca Reindel, the AFL-CIO union’s occupational safety and health director, said. “This is something that is only going to make the problem worse.”

One thing is clear from a reporter’s conversations with laid-off federal workers this year: The cuts have been anything but straightforward and efficient.

By many estimates, the increasing use of artificial intelligence is set to produce significant job losses. The prospect of serious disruption demands that we start formulating egalitarian policy solutions right now.

Employers will have far less incentive to comply with an anti-wage theft law under a new Department of Labor rule.

It’s long past time to fix this failure in our economy and in our politics.
