Zohran Mamdani got the headlines, but New York was not a one-off. Candidates endorsed by the Working Families Party had amazing election successes elsewhere in America, showing well-organized progressives can beat the power of big money.
The precariat rose up, with passion, desire for change, and votes. The issue was an excess compensation tax on corporations to fund social, economically integrated, affordable housing across Seattle which earlier had passed with a 26 percent margin.
“We commend every Democrat and Republican who signed the discharge petition to bring the Protect America’s Workforce Act to a vote, but the fight isn’t over,” said AFL-CIO President Liz Shuler.
Resistance is everywhere
For Democrats, the main issue in the shutdown wasn’t electoral backlash — it was the filibuster. Leadership feared its removal, viewing it as a safeguard to keep the party’s rising left wing in check.
