Robert Burns, 1759 - 1796, was a pioneer of Romanticism and a source of inspiration to the founders of both liberalism and socialism. His many songs and poems include such standards as "Auld Lang Syne" and "Tam o' Shanter." In 2009 the Scottish public (in a TV poll) voted him the greatest Scot who ever lived.
