Citizens around the world are calling on their governments to ratify the Nuclear Weapons Ban Treaty—and the United States has a leading role to play. Nuclear weapons have no place in our future.
Last week, Vladimir Putin issued a warning. “If the United States deploys new intermediate-range missiles in Europe after withdrawing from a nuclear treaty prohibiting these weapons, European nations will be at risk of ‘a possible counterstrike.’”
The passivity toward nuclear weapons, of which the former defense secretary spoke, is being defied across the world. After a decade of global organizing by peace and social movement, 122 countries agreed in 2017 to adopt a ban on nuclear weapons.
