The Importance of the Fight for the South -- and Why It Can and Must be Won

Bob Wing and Stephen C. McClure Organizing UpGrade
The far right, racism, militarism, inequality, and poverty are all centered in the South. The majority of African Americans, the main protagonist of progressive politics in this country, live in the South. And the South has more electoral votes, battleground state votes, population, and congresspersons than any other region. The South is changing rapidly, giving rise to more progressive demographic groups - especially Black and Latino migrations...

Who's Behind The Plot Against DACA

Center for New Community
Anti-immigrant organizations like FAIR, CIS, NumbersUSA, and IRLI, all of which have ties to white nationalists, have long taken a hardline stance that the federal government should dramatically restrict immigration and make life as difficult as possible for undocumented immigrants already living here. Their harsh viewpoints make no exception for young undocumented individuals who have been living in the U.S. since childhood.

Class & Inequality: The Book that Explains Charlottesville

Marshall Steinbaum Boston Review
The University of Virginia has long been a bastion of white supremacy and its validating scholarship. The book’s author identifies how such antidemocratic sentiment has long gestated in academia generally, encapsulated in neoclassical economics and its validation of alleged rational economic behaviors -- theories that originated in opposition to the New Deal and the Civil Rights movement and predominate in today's conservative and far-right movements today.

Valerie Strauss Washington Post
After six months, Betsy DeVos has taken some major steps to change education policy, and her very presence at the head of the U.S. Education Department signals something important about the past, present and future of public education in the United States. She faces protests at many public appearances, which is why she receives special protection from the U.S. Marshals Service, at an average cost so far this year of $1 million a month.

Trump Asked What Minority Americans Have to Lose by Voting for Him. We Now Have a Clear Answer.

German Lopez; Andrew Prokop Vox
During the election Donald Trump made his pitch to black and Latino voters: “What do you have to lose?” Six months into his presidency, Trump is giving a very clear answer: quite a lot, actually. During the campaign Trump was clear about his commitments to rolling back racial justice and civil rights gains, fashioning his campaign on a “tough on crime” and “law and order” platform that many racial minorities recognized as a dog whistle for racist policies.

Rather Than Do The Right Thing, McCain Did The Right-Wing Thing

Peter Dreier Huffington Post
So much for McCain’s claim to be “maverick.” John McCain and Ted Kennedy, who both returned to the Senate floor to cast votes after revealing that they had brain cancer. Kennedy cast a vote to protect Medicare. McCain cast a cowardly vote to undo Obamacare, a vote that could deny health coverage to millions of Americans. McCain, whose brain cancer is terminal, will die with dishonor.

The Disturbing Dawn Of The Alt-Right - The Rise Again of White Nationalism

Heather "Digby" Parton Hullabaloo
Trump's nationalism is absolutely about ethno-purity and an element of populism as well, although it's clearly a misdirection...it's largely about wounded national pride which has been a potent motivating force on the American right for a very long time. The reason Trump is now playing the conservative anthem "Proud To Be An American" at his rallies is: Good old fashioned jingoism - the one thing that brings the old right, the new right and the alt-right together.

Vindication for Planned Parenthood - Grand Jury Indicts Anti-Choice Zealots Who Produced Phony Planned Parenthood Videos

New York Times editorial New York Times
Neither the videos nor the many investigations that followed have found any evidence that Planned Parenthood employees offered to sell fetal tissue for a profit. Texas is the 12th state in which investigations stemming from the videos have found no wrongdoing by Planned Parenthood. A grand jury in Harris County, Tex., went a step further. Though it was convened to investigate Planned Parenthood, it indicted two members of the group that made the videos instead.

There is No Doubt that the Bernie Generation Is Our Political Future

Tom Hayden The Peace & Justice Resource Center
The Bernie generation is our political future, joining with groups demanding living wages or $15/hr, Black Lives Matter, the Dreamers, and 350.org. With their roots in the Occupy movement, they are viscerally mad at the rigged economy based on McJobs and the monopoly power of the plutocrats. This is such an important election, the riskiest of my lifetime. If we win, then we can resume our quarrels and patient work for peace and justice.
