A “rigging of the system” that empowered employers over workers was due to policy changes and changes in business practices that systematically undercut workers’ ability to get higher pay, job security, and better-quality jobs.
Downgrading workers and their jobs in the global supply chains must be stopped. Strong union organising, intelligent union strategies and collaborative working underpinned by robust international standards, is the way to do it.
International Labor Organization (ILO) Conventions that protect worker rights should be binding. Just as international financial institutions have the power to enforce their regulations, so too the ILO should have the power to sanction states or multinational corporations that breach its principles.
