How We View War

Francesco Strazzari / il manifesto Global (Rome)

On August 4, 1914, when the Social Democrats in the Reichstag voted for war credits, the International dissolved in a single day. Since then the roles keep changing, but the accusations stay the same: social-patriots against defeatists, accomplices of the aggressor against accomplices of imperialism.

General Strikes in Europe

Carmen Obregón / Demócrata (Madrid)

In Spain, the unions UGT and CCOO have called for a general strike in November. The campaign chief of the acting president and leader of the PSOE, María Jesús Montero, stated that this demonstration will be against the opposition and not against the Government of Pedro Sánchez. Nevertheless, Spain faces a situation unique in the history of the European Union.

__________

African States vs Internet Oppositions

Ephraim Percy Kenyanito / Global Voices (The Hague)

When a state shuts a network its because the network is what people use to coordinate opposition. A shutdown is not a speech instrument; it is an instrument for preventing coordinated action, and examinations and demonstrations are two instances of the same reach. Cut the network during a protest, and you have not silenced a conversation. You have dispersed an assembly before it forms.

__________

Cubans on the Spot

Rodrigo Acuña / Truthout (Sacramento)

“On my block, if someone steals, the neighbors themselves point them out and report them. We know that the real enemy is not the fellow Cuban struggling alongside you, but rather Yankee imperialism and its lackeys, who prevent us from developing.”

__________

Iranian Teachers Will Not Back Down

Duaa e Zahra Shah / Waging Nonviolence (Brooklyn)

The Iranian teachers’ movement has proven resilient against virtually every form of repression, from internet shutdowns to detentions and killings, while continuing to press its demands. Local and provincial teachers’ associations operate across the country, while an umbrella network called the Coordinating Council of Iranian Teachers’ Trade Associations, or CCITTA, links many of them.
