Puerto Rico’s New Party of the Working People Fights Austerity

Rafael Bernabe New Politics
Puerto Rico is in a severe economic crisis. The Partido del Pueblo Trabajador (PPT) was founded in 2010 to build a movement to combat austerity and the fundamental roots of the crisis: Since 1898 when the United States took Puerto Rico from Spain, the movement and shape of Puerto Rico’s economy have been largely determined by the priorities and preferences of U.S. capital. The PPT unites electoral work with movement building with the goal of radical change.

Distressed Debt Specialists: Vultures Hovering Over Puerto Rico

Rupert Neate The Guardian
Billionaire “vulture funds” managers have called on Puerto Rico to increase taxes, sell $4 billion worth of public buildings and drastically cut public spending, particularly on education, in order to pay the debt they have purchased. These “distressed debt” specialists hired former International Monetary Fund (IMF) economists to produce a “typically IMF recipe for radical austerity”, rejecting any attempts to restructure the poor island nation’s $72 billion debt.

How the United States Economically and Politically Strangled Puerto Rico

Mark Karlin, Truthout Interview Truthout
Although Puerto Ricans were granted US citizenship in 1917, the United States continued to exploit, oppress and eventually launch a "war" on the people of Puerto Rico to gain land and resources. The book, War Against All Puerto Ricans, is a vivid, detailed account of the brutal treatment of a people "liberated" from Spain only to be subjugated by the US.
