The Second City is still grappling with a long history of police brutality.

It came from the top and that's never been a secret. The president authorized the building of those CIA "black sites" and the use of what came to be known as "enhanced interrogation techniques" and has spoken of this with a certain pride. The president's top officials essentially put in an order at the Department of Justice for "legal" justifications that would, miraculously, transform those "techniques" into something other than torture. - Tom Engelhardt

Many Latin American countries have moved past impunity for human rights abuses. I refuse to believe that it is not possible for the United States to do the same.

One thing that I wanted to learn in talking to a torturer - I guess every person is different - but I wanted to see: did this destroy him? Did this destroy his soul? Is he like a broken man wracked with guilt? And he wasn't.

We will likely hear these false appeals to an imaginary history a great deal with the release of the Senate report on CIA torture. It seems to me self-evident that most of the members of the Constitutional Convention would have voted to release the report and also would have been completely appalled at its contents.

Twelve Nobel Peace Laureates have called upon President Obama, who received the award in 2009, to ensure full disclosure of the torture practices of the CIA and other U.S. agencies conducted in the name of "fighting terrorism." The Nobel Laureates' letter urged President Obama to take four specific steps to reject the “flagrant use of torture and other violations of international law” and close one of the “dark chapters” of U.S. history.
