The constitution of the American workplace is a dictatorship of the CEO and perhaps the shareholders or partners—whoever is running the firm functions as a dictator.
The post-neoliberal world could move in a neo-authoritarian, elitist, anti-democratic direction. Or it could be a communitarian, multiracial democracy. For the second option prevails, labor must help forge a new order that lifts all working people.
The “cancel culture” debate never focuses on at-will employment, which allows most American workers to be “canceled” at the drop of a hat — even those teaching in higher education.
