REWIND - A Week of Quotes and Cartoons

SUNDAY

Quote of the Day
July 15, 2013

'We are sick and tired of being sick and tired. What
we are now charged with is the responsibility to
sustain our unity and have our emotions fuel a
relentless pursuit of reform.

'In 2013, it should not be this difficult, by every
statistical metric, to be a black man in America.'

Quote of the Day
July 15, 2013

'While Mr. Zimmerman's conviction might have
provided an emotional catharsis, we would still be a
country plagued by racism, which persists in ever
more insidious forms despite the Supreme Court's
sanguine assessment that "things have changed
dramatically," as it said in last month's ruling
striking down the heart of the Voting Rights Act.
(The Justice Department is right to continue its
investigation into whether Mr. Zimmerman may still
be prosecuted under federal civil rights laws.)'

TUESDAY

Quote of the Day

'We cannot allow our country to be a place where an
unarmed teenager walking to his own home can be
shot with impunity by a self-styled neighborhood
watch vigilante. The gun death of a teenager should
not require the protests of thousands to get a proper
investigation. Young people of color should not have
to fear going out in public, walking down the streets
of their neighborhoods, or sitting in their own cars.
Racial profiling is a menace; we will not let the
unsubstantiated -- and racist -- fears of some run
roughshod over the rights and lives of people of
color.

'NOW activists have added their voices to the
groundswell demanding that the Department of
Justice investigate George Zimmerman for violating
the civil rights of Trayvon Martin. We will continue
in our common struggle for equality and justice for
all people.'

National Organization for Women (NOW),
the country's largest organization of feminist
activists with 500,000 contributing members
and 550 chapters in all 50 states and the District of
Columbia.

WEDNESDAY

Quote of the Day

'Tell me it's a sick joke: Former U.S. Treasury
Secretary Lawrence Summers, the guy who tops the
list of those responsible for sabotaging the world's
economy, is lobbying to be the next chairman of the
Federal Reserve. But no, it makes perfect sense,
since Summers has long succeeded spectacularly by
failing.

'Why should his miserable record in the Clinton and
Obama administrations hold him back from future
disastrous adventures at our expense? With Ben
Bernanke set to step down in January, and Obama
still in deep denial over the pain and damage his
former top economic adviser Summers brought to
tens of millions of Americans, this darling of Wall
Street has yet another shot to savage the economy.'

THURSDAY

Quote of the Day

'But between 1979 and 2011, income growth slowed
and favored those at the top. Since 1979, the total
share of income claimed by the bottom 99 percent
has steadily decreased. By 2011, the top one percent
had captured an additional 10 percent of the
nation's income.

'This was the result of intentional policy decisions
on taxes, trade, labor, macroeconomics, and
financial regulation.'

FRIDAY

Quote of the Day

'I live in the city where Dred Scott challenged his
slave status for years and was unrelenting in
pursuit of freedom for his family until the courts
finally granted it twelve years later. To me, that's a
beautiful and inspiring example of struggle. Yet, it
seems like the words of U.S. Supreme Court Justice
Taney have permeated the minds and spirits of the
city and ultimately the country: Blacks have no
rights that whites are bound to respect.

'Unless our inertia takes us back to the days in this
country where people of color and women had no
rights, the imperative is clear. We must unite the
masses of people to rise up and provide a strategic
plan for organizing our communities to victories.'

SATURDAY

Quote of the Day

'You know, when Trayvon Martin was first shot I
said that this could have been my son. Another way
of saying that is Trayvon Martin could have been me
35 years ago. And when you think about why, in the
African American community at least, there's a lot of
pain around what happened here, I think it's
important to recognize that the African American
community is looking at this issue through a set of
experiences and a history that doesn't go away.'
