Lorde is Only the Latest: How Touring in Israel Thrusts Musicians Into Controversy

On Dec. 18, New Zealand pop music sensation Lorde announced plans to play concerts in Israel and Russia. On Dec. 24, she announced the cancellation of her Israeli concert, which was scheduled for June 5 at the Tel Aviv Convention Centre. “I’m not too proud to admit I didn’t make the right call on this one,” she said in a statement.

This throws me 362 years back, to the expulsion of the legendary philosopher Benedict (Baruch) Spinoza in 1656, from the Amsterdam Jewish-Portuguese community. There are admittedly differences, which I shall address, between that expulsion and the banning of Jewish Voice for Peace – but there are also striking similarities, which I believe are instructive for understanding the psychological mechanisms at hand.

Bobby Rush Opposes Israel Anti-Boycott Act

Although Rep. Bobby Rush's name appears on the list of co-sponsors of anti-BDS legislation, he is opposed to the legislation which would criminalize support for the boycott of Israel. Promoted by Israel advocacy groups to undermine the movement for Palestinian rights in the United States, it poses a civil liberties threat thaqt has led the ACLU to call for its defeat.
