From “Salt of the Earth” to “Barbie”
The SAG-AFTRA strike comes at a time when polls suggest unions are more popular in the U.S. than at any time since 1965, and the labor movement is experiencing a resurgence of organizing. These 5 films reveal some of the history of this organizing.

Blacklisted Hollywood workers independently produced one of the great labor films. “One of the reasons we made ‘Salt of the Earth’ after we were blacklisted was to commit a crime worthy of the punishment,” Paul Jarrico said.
In the postwar-Cold War period U.S. corporations used anti-communist hysteria to attack the labor movement. Salt of the Earth - tells the story of heroic Mexican American mineworkers, and the International Union of Mine, Mill and Smelter Workers.

The local Steelworkers union Shores decertified is the inheritor of Mine-Mill Local 890, a union made famous by the 1954 film “Salt of the Earth”, which dramatized Local 890’s 1951 Empire Zinc strike. A number of members of the creative team behind the film had been blacklisted by Hollywood.
