Jyoti Madhusoodanan PLOS One
While very little in paleoanthropology is ever “settled,” a new study represents an important step forward in terms of settling that the "Hobbit" people were really a different human species, and not pathological individuals of Homo sapiens. A Virtual Universe

MIT scientists trace 13 billion years of galaxy evolution, from shortly after the Big Bang to the present day. Their simulation, named Illustris, captures both the massive scale of the Universe and the intriguing variety of galaxies -- something previous modelers have struggled to do. It produces a Universe that looks remarkably similar to what we see through our telescopes, giving us greater confidence in our understanding of the Universe, from the laws of physics to our theories about galaxy formation.

Schizophrenia: What's in My Head?

When she's experiencing hallucinations, artist Sue Morgan feels compelled to draw; to 'get it out of her head'. Sue was diagnosed with schizophrenia about 20 years ago. The drawing is therapeutic, but it's also Sue's way of expressing the complex and sometimes frightening secret world in her head. In this film Sue meets Sukhi Shergill, a clinician and researcher at the Institute of Psychiatry in London. He's also making pictures, but using MRI to peer inside the brains of schizophrenia patients.
