We Must Honor the Legacy of Selma Foot Soldiers by Repairing What They Fought For

Deborah J. Vagins Huffington Post
John Legend eloquently in accepting the Oscar for best original song for the civil-rights drama Selma said: "Selma is now because the struggle for justice is right now...the Voting Rights Act that they fought for 50 years ago is being compromised right now in this country today." In 2013, the Supreme Court crippled one of the most effective protections of the Voting Rights Act. The Voting Rights Amendment Act of 2015 seeks to repair the damage done by the Supreme Court.

LBJ Doesn’t Deserve the Credit for Selma

Diane Nash The New Journal and Guide
My husband James Bevel and I conceptualized and wrote the plan that became the Selma Right to Vote movement. We believed that if Negroes in Alabama could vote, they could better protect their children from things like the Alabama church bombing.

Why Selma Matters: A Mother's Perspective

Stephanie Shonekan Praxis Center
The Black Lives Matter movement and other such responses to the tragic nexus of murders last year are the twenty-first century versions of the civil rights and black power movements, so I hoped that Selma would provide critical context for my children. The civil rights movement of the 1950s and 60s is extremely painful to watch. Young African Americans, including my own children, are reluctant to dig deeper into that era because it is simply too difficult.

It's Critics of 'Selma' Who Are Distorting Civil Rights History

Jim Naureckas FAIR Blog
The attacks on the film Selma not only distort the actual relationship between King and Johnson, they distort the film's portrayal of the relationship. LBJ is not the villain of the movie; the movie presents him as a complicated figure who under prodding accomplishes something great.
