Black participation in the American Revolution is now an integral part of the story of American freedom. However, the experiences of Black women who fled slavery during the American Revolution have largely gone unexamined.

Some 25 states have already enacted or are considering laws to ban teaching what they call “critical race theory” (“CRT”) in public schools, a concept that school officials around the country deny they even teach.

“It’s not that Gen. Granger was giving information to the enslaved people. He was giving it to the masters” — at the barrel of a gun.

The federal government alone is capable of paying the bill. And, as the entity that created and maintains the black-white wealth gap, it should pay the debt.

As we celebrate Juneteenth this year, the promise of freedom alone isn’t enough to move us forward. Instead, we need to celebrate it every year with sustained action and investment to repair the inequality still lacking today.

History is politics by other means, and we who care about it have to fight this war better and more strategically ourselves. We need history that can get us marching but also render us awed by how much there is to learn.
