Re: Democratic Socialists Further Advance

My name is Steve Gold, and I'm an active volunteer in the campaign of Abdul El-Sayed to become Michigan's next U.S. Senator.

I'm writing to tell you that despite your saying twice in the story below that Dr. El-Sayed is a member of DSA, he has said many times and quite explicitly that he is not.  I'm surprised that Mr. Garver, who the story identifies as "a member of the steering committee of the DSA International Committee," doesn't know this, but the facts are what they are.

Thank you for noting this correction.  I read Portside consistently and to my great benefit.  Keep up the good work!

I think it’s important to acknowledge that many DSA members including Mayor Mamdani are also members of the Democratic Party. In fact Mamdani stresses that DSA is not a party but an organization. Additionally, progressive third-term Senator Chris Murphy advocates for a Democratic Party that includes both DSA members and ex-MAGA voters.

Re: Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez Should Run for President

I read with interest Bhaskar Sunkara's piece urging Congresswoman Ocasio-Cortez run for President in 2028:

If she wants to do so, it would be a historic opportunity. But there is a but.

We have learned recently in tragic ways how our longstanding tendency on the left globally and in the US towards hero worship can blind us to political necessities. In the US, that means defeating MAGA first and foremost. Her candidacy might well build an inclusive and effective anti-MAGA movement nationally and a 2028 presidential ticket, which might well be on as President or Vice-President.

But only if from the very start she makes absolutely clear that she only welcomes support from activists and voters and organizations who will pledge to strongly support and endorse the ultimate Presidential nominee if it is not her. And she should pledge to do so herself.

The Congresswoman should also remind everyone of her own Oath of Office and insist on no less of a commitment from her supporters.

For a reminder of the nature of that oath, see the swearing in Democrat of Congressman Christian Menefee of Texas, see: https://youtu.be/jihGPvezwug?si=nRM3_CuqDlJpzSUq.

Re: How Biden Enabled Israel’s Aggression Toward Gaza—and Iran

It is obvious that many lives were lost because Biden would not enforce US law!

Thanks for the chronology however the statement above is still valid.

Re: Jewish Socialists Helped Build Multiracial Democracy in America

I am finding this an easier read, as well as more interesting and in particular relevant to my life, than I did Molly Crabapple's book on the European Bund.

Re: Putting South Carolina First Could Mean Less Power for Black Voters

The Corporatist love S.C. because the advantage it gives them to get a w because of the makeup of Dem voters in the state. It does nothing to warrant any attention in terms of the big picture because S.C. Dems can't deliver in the general election and the DNC knows that

It's certainly worth noting that Sen. Chris Murphy has called for a $25 an hour minimum wage to keep pace with inflation.

A funding crises puts stress on the most vulnerable among us where priorities and retention within defender ranks causes a rut. Smooth sailing is never expected and now tornadic activity arrives, an untimely and powerful force.
