Unions’ Misgivings on Health Law Burst Into View

Many union leaders have come to the conclusion that the Affordable Care Act contains provisions that may seriously undermine collectively bargained health insurance plans covering millions of their members. In addition, union leaders are angry over the Obama administration's willingness to relax rules for employer mandated coverage while ignoring the threat posed to full-time workers by making a 30 hour work week the threshold for mandatory insurance coverage.

“We are a small part of the 150 million Americans who work for a living,” AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka said in his keynote address Monday at the labor federation's convention in Los Angeles. “We cannot win economic justice only for ourselves, for union members alone. It would not be right and it’s not possible. All working people will rise together, or we will keep falling together.”

The AFL-CIO Is Exploring New Investments in Alt-Labor and Texas Organizing

The AFL-CIO is discussing “the next stage” in alternate formations and there “will be some limited, thoughtful experiments in different places through various affiliates.” The AFL-CIO also plans to support an ambitious multi-union effort to organize in Texas. “The AFT has come to us and said, ‘We want you to convene other unions to make a long-term investment in Texas and we’re going to do it.”

The Workers Defense Project, founded in 2002, has emerged as one of the nation's most creative organizations for immigrant workers. Its focus is the Texas construction industry, which employs more than 600,000 workers. It is one of 225 worker centers nationwide, aiding immigrant workers. Workers Centers show what is possible, and may help infuse new life into the labor movement.

UFCW to Rejoin AFL-CIO

The 1.3 million member United Food and Commercial Workers Union will rejoin the AFL-CIO after an 8 year hiatus with the Change to Win labor federation. The UFCW will become the AFL-CIO's largest private sector affiliate and bring the labor federation's membership to about 13 million.
