Flight attendants from United, Alaska, American, Southwest and other airlines picketed at major airports on Tuesday. Flight attendant unions are seeking pay increases and compensation for work during boarding.
Union flight attendants at American Airlines recently delivered a strike authorization vote of 99%, with 93% turnout. The staggering total was the result of not only a membership itching to walk out but a campaign that engaged rank-and-file members.
A federal board would first have to approve a walkout.
The catering workers, some of whom earn as little as $8.46 an hour, are asking for higher wage and less costly health insurance.

Mechanics at American Airlines are threatening to strike if a new contract isn’t negotiated, and the union president has declared that employees are prepared for the dispute to erupt.

Airline travelers are willing to compromise on personal comfort and convenience in return for lower fares and regularly scheduled flights. But I doubt the flying public would agree to deeply discount their own safety by letting the government hack away at an essential industry standard designed to protect flyers from inexperienced pilots.
