Criticism of Israeli policies and expressions of Palestine solidarity, while always to some degree controversial, had long been part of acceptable political discourse on the British left-of-center. That is no longer the case.

South African freedom fighters here respond to the purge of Jeremy Corbyn from membership in Britain's Labour Party last week, over charges that he is anti-Semitic. The purge was reversed this week by the party's National Executive Committee.

Association with the Palestinian armed resistance and its political parties is not a cause for shame or a justification for repression. The legitimacy of armed struggle to liberate a people from colonial and foreign domination is legally recognized.

Even campaigns that may not reach their objective can contribute to explaining what is happening on the ground and what the Palestinian people are calling for, and to raising awareness about Israel’s regime of disposession and colonization.

The right of return for Palestinians uprooted by Zionist forces in 1948 – including their children and grandchildren – is the central issue of justice for Palestine. Yet it often remains an afterthought for solidarity activists.

They founded anti-occupation movements and fought for the soul of Israeli society, but ultimately decided to emigrate. The new exiles tell Haaretz how they were harassed and silenced, until they had almost no choice but to leave.
