In the election of 1920, Eugene V. Debs, the Socialist Party presidential candidate, polled nearly a million votes without ever hitting the campaign trail. Debs was behind bars in the federal penitentiary in Atlanta, Georgia, serving a 10-year sentence for sedition. It was a not a bum rap. Debs had defiantly disobeyed a law he deemed unjust, the Sedition Act of 1918.

Although May ’68 itself failed to deliver a revolution, the lessons of the era – alliance-building by including liberation struggles outside of socialism – shaped my later time in power.

Bernd Gehrke is critical of those in the peace movement and left who dismissed the threat of invasion coming from Russia - a failure to understand the genesis of today’s Russian capitalism and its emergence from Soviet-era party bureaucracy.

The man who oversaw the peaceful yet tragic end to state socialism in the east, then stayed to fight for the working class in the newly unified Germany, passed away on February 10, aged 95.
