Music has always been a powerful expression and organizing tool of the oppressed people of South Africa. Here is music inspired by and supporting their struggles, including the artists Hugh Masakela, Abdullah Ibrahim, Johnny Clegg and Gil Scott-Heron.

South African jazz musician Hugh Masakela tells the story of the life and labor of the immigrant coal and gold miners of South Africa, so hard that they curse the coal trains that brought them.
Nelson Mandela makes a surprise appearance in this Johnny Clegg performance of Asimbonanga after the unbanning. The lyrics are powerful protest against the imprisonment of Mandela and his comrades a sense of loss for the murdered Steve Biko and others.

Some have questioned whether the Tripartite Alliance between the trade union federation, the ANC and the SACP. is still relevant to Cosatu. If the government ignores everything we say, what is the point of being in alliance with the governing party? This view is short-sighted. Yes we have suffered some setbacks, just as we did with Gear. But that battle raged for years before we eventually triumphed. It will be the same now.
“In South Africa, the Chief Operating Officer of Nissan sat down and listened to me,” said Witness Ndlovu, a union steward at Nissan’s South Africa South Africa Delegationplant . Ndlovu is a member of the National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (NUMSA), the national autoworkers union in South Africa. “I am surprised and shocked,” he said, “by the fact that Nissan interferes so blatantly with the right of U.S. workers to have a voice in the workplace.”
