What Donald Trump Can and Can't Do to Immigrants

David Bacon NACLA
Donald Trump's draconian immigration enforcement efforts face a basic challenge: the United States operates within an economic system that profits off immigrant labor. Immigrant labor is more vital to many industries than it's ever been before. Today, about 57% of the country's entire agricultural workforce is undocumented. But the list of other industries dependent on immigrant labor is long.

What Workers at Carrier and Rexnord Have to Say About Trump.

Arun Gupta Raw Story
Time and again workers mention the same issue as to why they abandoned the Democrats: NAFTA. Feltner says, “The NAFTA bill is still fresh in people’s minds. The international was all, ‘Vote Democrat, Democrat, Democrat.’ Then they make an announcement about jobs going away and it’s because of NAFTA. The workers connect that to the Democrats, and Hillary was saddled with that.”

The Union Revolt No One is Talking About

Bob Hennelly US Labor Against the War
This election proved that you overlook the labor movement at your peril. Democrats took rank-and-file union members for granted. They must make labor central to the conversation again .

Tim Jones and Mark Niquette Bloomberg
The split amid an unexpectedly contentious Democratic primary season has exposed contrasting agendas in organized labor. Trade unionists are exercised by international deals, which they blame for the loss of hundreds of thousands of manufacturing jobs. Service workers less affected by globalization advocate collective-bargaining rights and wage protection.

What Solidarity Looks Like: Nearly 100 Unions Pitch In to Help Flint

Brandon Weber The Progressive
Union members from across the country have donated time and resources to Flint -- helping provide a sense of humanity to a community that needs it. The one-two punch of auto plants moving to places like Mexico, combined with the further economic damage of the Great Recession, means that this city which once had a population of 200,000 now has half that number, 40% of whom live at or below the poverty level.

The Maquiladora Workers of Juárez Find Their Voice

David Bacon The Nation
Low pay, abusive conditions, no union representation - employees are fed up and fighting back. About 255,000 people work directly in Juárez's 330 maquiladoras, about 13 percent of the total nationally, making Juárez one of the largest concentrations of manufacturing on the US/Mexico border. Almost all the plants are foreign-owned. Eight of Juárez's 17 largest factories belong to US corporations,

The Agony of Mexican Labor Today

Dan La Botz Dollars & Sense
Mexican labor unions and workers are, overall, in the worst situation in decades. President Peña Nieto has succeeded in passing a series of so-called reforms - education, labor, energy, and communications - that will have devastating effects on an already weakened labor movement. The Mexican government has controlled unions since the Mexican Revolution of 1910-1920, but it was in the 1930s that the system of one-party state control over the unions was fully developed.
