California Fires - Time for Disaster Socialism

Nato Green San Francisco Examiner

It's either God's wrath for squandering a perfectly good planet, or our own squandering a perfectly good planet - and it's becoming uninhabitable. We need a People's Fire Recovery Plan, a "disaster socialism" to answer disaster capitalism.

The Secret History of FEMA

Garrett M. Graff Wired
Most of the various predecessors to FEMA weren’t all that concerned with civilian natural disasters. They were primarily focused on responding to nuclear war; the evolution to being the first call after a hurricane, flood, or tornado came about in part because it turned out America doesn’t have all that many nuclear wars—and the equipment and supply stockpiles and disaster-response experts at FEMA’s predecessors were useful for something other than the apocalypse.

Capitalism: A Disaster for All Seasons

Steve Fraser TomDispatch.com
More Sandys are surely headed our way, more climate-driven disasters of all sorts...They will be no more "natural" than the Chicago fire, the Johnstown flood or the San Francisco earthquake. We need to deal with now is the power of the finance, insurance and real estate sector whose leading corporations now effectively run our economy. Without doing that, the "nature" these interests have helped create will punish us all while providing a ghoulish boondoggle for a few.
