Rural Democrats insist the party can’t afford to bypass their communities, which account for 15-to-20% of the U.S. electorate, or some 25 to 30 million voters. Donald Trump won a whopping 59% of the vote in rural areas in 2016, and even more in 2020.
Now that the state has fair election maps, the only thing stopping the left from flipping rural districts is themselves.
Sustaining democracy with collective action
One lesson is that he showed up, repeatedly, in places that Democrats rarely visited. He began during his run for Senate in 2016, when he lost in the primary. After he was elected lieutenant governor in 2018, he traveled the state constantly.
