One neighborhood in New York has elected so many democratic socialists—including Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Zohran Mamdani—that people have started calling it “the People’s Republic,” or a part of the Commie Corridor.

Zohran Mamdani’s victory was rooted in organizations that took up the base-building and mobilization functions that once fell to parties. When was the last time being on the left was fun? It was a year-long act of collective joy. We actually won.

Zohran Mamdani got the headlines, but New York was not a one-off. Candidates endorsed by the Working Families Party had amazing election successes elsewhere in America, showing well-organized progressives can beat the power of big money.

The precariat rose up, with passion, desire for change, and votes. The issue was an excess compensation tax on corporations to fund social, economically integrated, affordable housing across Seattle which earlier had passed with a 26 percent margin.

Volunteers and advocates said the best thing to do today is celebrate, rest—then keep organizing. Several organizations that helped elect Mamdani were already organizing for policy changes similar to his major planks

Polling shows mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani in a commanding lead with Jewish New Yorkers, but you won’t read about it in the paper of record.

Young people carried Zohran Mamdani in his victory in the mayoral primary, stunning establishment Democrats and reshaping the electorate. Nowhere was this more clear than the so-called “Commie Corridor,” where young voters had extremely high turnout.

"Working people deserve leaders who will fight for them, not grovel at the feet of their billionaire donors," said Maurice Mitchell of the Working Families Party, one of the groups involved in the new coalition.

Along with the turnout of 50,000 volunteers who embraced the Mamdani campaign, the NY WFP, achieved the following: Knocked 7,750 doors; made 126K phone calls; organized 300 early voting poll site and over 200 election day poll site visibility shifts.
