Democracy defenders need to unify, strategize, and pull from deep wells of conviction to turn back the MAGA tide.

It’s all out there in plain sight: The MAGA bloc aims to determine both who votes and who counts the votes. Or put another way, whose votes should count and whose should not.

When we demonstrate on the ground that radicals are the most reliable and effective fighters against the mortal threat of Trumpism, we maximize our chances of gaining support for our perspective and our organizations.

This is the second in a series of columns looking at Left strategy today. Key to Strategy #1 focused on the first component of Sun Tzu’s dictum that to prevail in battle it is necessary to “know the enemy and know yourself.”

To “know” our enemy, we need to grasp its essential character, its strengths, and its vulnerabilities.That translates today into getting the clearest possible picture of the racist and authoritarian coalition that has “Make America Great Again”.

A broad coalition of groups is calling for a week of action April 5-9 to press for passage of the For the People Act, S.1 – federal legislation that would counter the GOP’s push for harsh state-level voter suppression bills.

This is a battle between those who want to ensure permanent white minority rule vs. all those who believe this country must become a multiracial democracy. It’s daily trench warfare on every front, with USA's future if not the entire planet at stake.

Strategy and hard work can accomplish two essential objectives: win victories that deliver substantial immediate benefits to all affected by today’s interlocking health, economic and racial crises and do so in ways that shift power our way.

I believe that my experience, especially as a female, is both timely and relevant as an account of the struggles against the ruling class. I still believe that imperialism and capitalism are the scourges of democracy.

“Fanning the flames of racial animosity lies at the core of Trump’s election strategy, as it did in 2016.” This is why when activists say, “white supremacy is on the ballot” and “anti-Black racism is on the ballot” in 2020, they are dead right.
