Billionaire Sebastián Piñera’s right-wing government is undermining democratic institutions in Chile. Using laws and policies left over from the Pinochet era, the new government has acted swiftly to overturn reforms put in place by Michelle Bachelet's previous government.

On Sunday, a statue of the democratic hero, Orlando Letelier, was unveiled on Washington’s stately Massachusetts Avenue, near the spot where Letelier was killed in a 1976 car bombing — an assassination ordered by Chilean dictator Augusto Pinochet. Ronni Karpen Moffitt, a 25-year-old American co-worker whom Letelier had been giving a ride, also was killed in the attack, which became a rallying point for human rights advocates.

As I watch current events in Venezuela, I am haunted by memories of Chile. I lived in Chile from July 1972 until February 1973, while socialist Salvador Allende was president. I left Chile months before the fascist coup, although I had planned to return. That door closed.

Former Chilean Military Official Found Liable for Killing of Victor Jara
