My grandfather (a 1917 Norwegian immigrant) frequently and proudly described himself as a socialist. When I asked him what he meant, he always pointed me to FDR, the New Deal, and his proposed Second Bill of Rights. And here we are again.

The precariat rose up, with passion, desire for change, and votes. The issue was an excess compensation tax on corporations to fund social, economically integrated, affordable housing across Seattle which earlier had passed with a 26 percent margin.
Despite the frantic tone of mainstream media coverage (and the revolutionary overtones of the phrase “democratic socialist”) most of Mamdani’s agenda could be accomplished at minimal cost to the city. The only exception is free universal childcare.
