The annual decline in the number of union members actually slowed after the a right-to-work law in Michigan took effect in 2013. And membership grew to 604,000 in 2020 from 589,000 in 2019.
A broad coalition of groups is calling for a week of action April 5-9 to press for passage of the For the People Act, S.1 – federal legislation that would counter the GOP’s push for harsh state-level voter suppression bills.
The question is whether even a supportive president can reverse the decline in union power that economists say has helped hollow out America's middle class. Neither organized labor nor sympathetic politicians have managed to do that for decades.
In state after state, Republicans want to suppress voting because they know they are a minority party. It took decades to overcome the Jim Crow laws imposed at the end of Reconstruction. We can’t wait decades this time.
